In September 1989 14 Parachute Battalion group carried out a second amphibious exercise, dubbed Exercise Vlakwater, in the Saldanha Bay area. Unlike the Regular Army and National Guard items in the first Corps Area, the 78th Division did not take part within the Second Corps Area maneuvers and the primary Army maneuvers of 1935, 1939, and 1940 as an organized unit attributable to lack of enlisted personnel and equipment. 12 February 1945: III Corps. 2 February 1945: V Corps, First Army, twelfth Army Group. Following this, on 1 January 1982, Colonel F. J. Bestbier took up the publish of the first formally appointed commanding officer of forty four Parachute Brigade. On the time du Plessis was the commanding officer of the Orange Free State Command (OFS Cmd) and had previous experience serving in 1 Parachute Battalion. On 24 September 1980 the Brigade HQ was re-activated with Breytenbach as un-appointed Officer Commanding and moved to the farm Haakdoringfontein at Murrayhill near Wallmansthal, some 35 kilometers north of Pretoria. After moving to Murrayhill in 1980, forty four Parachute Brigade experienced comparatively little organizational improvement though the person items throughout the brigade remained operationally active.
